Final Reflection

Over the course of the semester, you will

  1. acknowledge your and others’ range of linguistic differences as resources, and draw on those resources to develop rhetorical sensibility

While writing the literature review with my group I noticed a difference between my language and theirs. However, we worked with separate documents and then added and edited them together, while editing I was able to spot the differences between the way I express, analyze my ideas- or ideas from the recourses we used. Writing the literature review exposed me to different writing, analyzing technique.

  1. enhance strategies for reading, drafting, revising, editing, and self-assessment

In addition to the peer reviews we received in the classroom, we had an internal system of reviewing each other’s work. The peer reviews were of substantial help because they allowed us to view our work from a different perspective and it also helped us maintain the overall structure of our paper and allowed our ideas to flow better. In the future, while working on similar projects, I would like to follow a similar system as I am convinced with its effectiveness.

Here’s an example of how we wrote our methodology part before the peer-review:

“Keyword: immigration, psychological effects, children separated from parents, deportation, and depression”

After the peer-review, our classmates advised us to dd the keywords in the methodology section:

The search engines that were used to find the articles are Google Scholar, and the CCNY libraries databases, specifically the EBSCOHost database.  We used a variety of keywords such as immigration, psychological effects, children separated from parents, deportation, and depression. This was done to maximize the number of articles we found. Family separation due to immigration policies is a new issue and there is not much recent research conducted about the topic. Our initial search yield thousands of results, which were not relevant to our topic. In order to narrow down our results, we set the date for published articles from 2013 to 2019.”

  1. negotiate your own writing goals and audience expectations regarding conventions of genre, medium, and rhetorical situation

While writing the literature review, our audience was well informed as they were our instructor and classmates. However, in the public campaign, we tried to use simpler language since our audience was the general public. Our purpose in the public campaign was also different than that in the literature review. In our literature review, we focused more on the psychological impact in both children and parents. While in our public campaign, our purpose was to reflect the current situation of family separation due to the immigration system and its impact.

  1. develop and engage in the collaborative and social aspects of writing processes

We were meeting at least twice a week in classroom and in the library. In addition to that, we used Basecamp in order to get feedback from our instructor. Our main tool for communicating was iMessage and FaceTime which helped us meet even when we weren’t physically available.

  1. engage in genre analysis and multimodal composing to explore effective writing across disciplinary contexts and beyond

We used a template provided by the instructor, in addition to the use of google doc. And google chat, basecamp, blackboard, and our site—the cuny academic common

  1. formulate and articulate a stance through and in your writing

In the conclusion of the literature review we formulated a stance that reflects all of our opinions. And while discussing the strength and weakness of our paper. Here’s an example form our paper:

“In addition, there should be future research on coping mechanisms and therapy with potential traumatic experiences and their efficiency on children. While, there are research on potential traumatic experiences and the effects of witnessing the arrest or detention of a parent which can be particularly traumatizing and need to be documented. The outcome and findings of these research should be used in reviewing and reforming the current immigration policies.”

  1. practice using various library resources, online databases, and the Internet to locate sources appropriate to your writing projects

We used the EPSCO host databases and limited our search to the years from 2013-2019. In addition, we looked at academic journal only after collecting all the sources and also, we eliminated literature reviews. We used key words such as, “Family separation on the border”, “immigration effects on children”..etc.

  1. strengthen your source use practices (including evaluating, integrating, quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing, synthesizing, analyzing, and citing sources)

In the process of writing the literature review, we had to look at different databases such as EPSCOhost, and Psycharticales. We looked at a verity of sources raging from articles to books, we reviewed and evaluated theses sources, and picked the ones that work best for our topics, our topic is investigating the psychological effects of family separation on children, specifically the ones that are forcibly separated from their parents. We had to read and analyze a lot of articles to write the most structured paper. Finally, we used our summarizing and paragraphing skills to avoid plagiarism and reflects our ideas. In addition, to practice using the APA style, which was my first time using it.
